Heelwork to Music

Heelwork & Freestyle to Music (doggy dancing to most) has been a sport since 1996, started in this country by Mary Ray.  Due to the popularity of the sport, since 2005, the Kennel Club now regularly holds the HTM & Freestyle Finals at Crufts each year.  It also holds the International Freestyle Competition where nominated competitors from around the world compete.

Both the Paws-n-Music Association and the Canine Freestyle GB Association, as well as several Dog Training Clubs around the country, hold KC Competitions throughout the year.  Students of the BMCA will be encouraged and supported in competition work if this is the road they wish to travel.  However, for most students the aim is to have fun and learn to establish a unique bond with their canine dancing partners.  Whichever route you wish to take, the highest standards will be taught.

An alternative to competition work is the Paws-n-Music Progress Awards.  Learned elements are choreographed into a short routine and you are assessed on your own abilities. There are 3 levels to aspire to in 4 different disciplines - Dressage, HTM, Freestyle & Dancing with Dogs.   You are graded as either a Pass, Merit or Distinction.  Rosettes and Certificates are rewarded at each of these levels and also an extra Pass, Merit and Distinction Badge as you gain each discipline at all levels, and all 4 disciplines at each level.  You will need to become a member of the Association if you want to take part in these awards.

With the BMCA you will learn:

  • All Heelwork & Freestyle positions
  • Dressage positions & movements
  • Twist & Turns, circles & pivots
  • Paw work, jumps, beg, bow & highs
  • Walking backwards, side stepping, weaving
  • How to use props & wear appropriate costumes
  • How to sequence moves together to form a routine & interpret your music

  • How to improvise & cope with performance nerves
  • How to prepare for & enter HTM & Freestyle Competitions

Classes are mixed ability and all breed of dog is welcome.  Puppies can be taught as well as older dogs under safe guidance.  Dogs attending the BMCA must be well socialised without aggressive problems.
